This course was cut out of a wooded area encompassing more than 240 acres of land located at the base of the Lavender Mountains The course architect Arthur Davis rode horseback into the heavily wooded area to pick the best setting for this course The terrain is rolling and locals say the course is reminiscent in some ways to Augusta National because of the many Georgia Pines A huge 127 acre lake comes into play on three holes and there are marshland type hazards throughout the course The front nine has deceptive fairways that seem to narrow from the tee boxes but in reality are fairly wide open Several grass bunkers protect the fairways and greens with several surrounding hole 6 in particular The signature hole is 9 a 549 yard par 5 featuring a scenic stone bridge that crosses over the lake The tee box on hole 6 offers a panoramic view of the horizon and on a clear day you can see up to thirty miles away Accuracy as opposed to power is necessary if you plan on scoring a low round therefore control of your short game is a must on this course Nearby Berry College sold this property to the City of Rome Golf Digest rated this course 57th best under the category of America s Top 75 Affordable Courses and they also rated it as the 19th Best in State course for 1997 98 All the men s tees shown above are also rated for ladies Practice chipping and putting areas are available and PGA certified instructors will provide lessons Seniors and juniors only enjoy the benefits of discount rates on the weekdays
